The Home In Tacoma proposal offers community-led solutions to growing housing concerns

ABOUT THE O.N.E HOME COALITION

O.N.E. – Opportunity. Need. Equity. – Home Coalition is a coalition of organizations aligned behind a shared vision of all Tacomans having an opportunity for home ownership in a thriving, diverse, and growing city. We believe that the City of Tacoma has an active role in ensuring that current and future housing needs are guided by a clear vision of our community’s housing opportunity needs.

O.N.E HOME COALITION VISION FOR HOME IN TACOMA

Home in Tacoma offers the City of Tacoma, its residents, and future residents a clear path to creating new housing opportunities which serve all levels of need. Home In Tacoma should emphasize increased density in areas which can easily absorb addition to infrastructure, while also incorporating thoughtful and creative design to create new ownership opportunities in Tacoma’s established neighborhoods.

Home in Tacoma should:

  • Create new home ownership opportunities, including creative ways to bring density which fits within the feel of SFH neighborhoods and limits impact on existing infrastructure.

  • Address the “missing middle” gap in housing selection to create more affordable first-home opportunities.

  • Developed underutilized corridors throughout the city.

  • Ensure that new development fit within the scope and feel of Tacoma’s existing neighborhoods.

ABOUT THE HOME IN TACOMA PLAN

Tacoma’s Planning Commission has developed policy recommendations to help meet Tacoma’s growing housing needs. The plan, known as “Home in Tacoma,” details a new vision for housing growth and will take action to make housing in our city more affordable.

This new plan will allow for better zoning standards to create more housing for those who live and work in Tacoma.

City Council is considering a set of measures that include:

  • Maintaining the unique character that defines Tacoma neighborhoods while creating new housing opportunities.

  • Developing more housing which will increase our local tax base, and attract more businesses.

  • Allowing a diverse selection of housing types from duplexes to cottage housing to multi-family dwellings.

  • Helping to protect our farms and wilderness by concentrating housing in the city and its centers.

ACHIEVING THIS VISION

To achieve our vision, we encourage the City of Tacoma to ensure that Home in Tacoma spreads new housing opportunity to each corner of the city. Density along transit corridors should be increased to ensure full capacity is used and infrastructure needs should be addressed in areas with the highest opportunities exist.

Home in Tacoma Should:

  • Emphasize development of traffic corridors and underutilized lands.

  • Enable greater housing density and affordability in all neighborhoods.

  • Partner with the private sector to address barriers which limit the ability to create affordable and diverse housing supply.

HOME IN TACOMA BENEFITS ALL OF TACOMA

Tacoma is a growing city with people attracted to its unique neighborhoods, vibrant arts scene, and proximity to the Sound and mountains. New housing development in Tacoma will not only allow people to stay in the city, but ensure a broad, stable tax base to fund needed infrastructure to accommodate this growth. Renewing Tacoma’s neighborhoods can create walkable communities and attract new commercial services to bring more jobs to Tacoma and enhance the quality of life for all the city’s residents.
